15K & Sprint Tri Training Week #8

Monday - Rest Day

Tuesday - Ran 5 miles

I ran around Holly's neighborhood while the kids were in co-op preschool.  It was a nice sunny morning.  It's kind of different running in an area you're unfamiliar with and I think this causes me to not run as well.  I felt like I was dragging at some points.  Her neighborhood is all FLAT.  There is not a single hill anywhere.  So different from the south side of town which has so many hills and the west side which is almost all hills.  I ran through Santana Park which was pretty fun--looks so nice after the hard work Doug & his crew has put into it.  I liked running while the kids are in school because I don't get that opportunity very often at all.

Wednesday - Bike 30 minutes, Swam 15 minutes

I biked first and did the interval track again.  Swimming was great as well.  Just a little bit late of a start and didn't get out the door until like 6:05 AM.  I showered at home which helped...got home in time.

Thursday - Group Power & Ran 3 miles

Made it to Group Power!  Actually got up for it.  It went well.  Triceps and shoulders are still my hardest.  I was planning on swimming but forgot my bathing suit.  I hung it out on the towel holder to dry and forgot to put it in my gym bag--I hate that!  I'm not coherent when I wake up nor can I think clearly which is why I usually pack everything the night before.  Luckily I could run instead.  I thought it would hard running with no music or headphones (I didn't have my iPod with me either) but it actually was fine.  I did the 5K track on the treadmill and finished in 27 minutes and kept my pace at 9 minute miles.

Friday - Swim 19 minutes, Stationary Bike 48 minutes

Went to the gym around 4 PM...never go at that time especially on a Friday afternoon.  It was the only time that worked.  Was worried I wouldn't finish my swimming in time before swim lessons started, but I did.  Both workouts were fine.  Just not my favorite time of day to work out.

Saturday - Rest

Rob was gone all day and there was no way I could run or go to the gym.  Sometimes I wish my gym was open until 10:30 PM on Saturdays (they are M-F) but they close at 8.  There is a market for 24 hour fitness gyms especially for stay-at-home moms.

Sunday - Ran 90 minutes (approx. 9 miles)

Gorgeous day!  So much sun.  I ran at Minto Brown where I have not run since last spring.  It was busy--lots of runners and bikers and tons of walkers.  I wore shorts and a t-shirt--was a little cold.  I could have gotten away with a long sleeve shirt.  Lots of people still in coats.  I get so hot when I run I tend to under dress now versus over.  The run went fine.  I am not as sore as I thought I would be.  I know I can do the 15K--wish I would have done a little more hill training.  But I might do more hills next weekend.

15K and Sprint Tri Training Week #7

Monday:  Ran 2 miles and lots of cleaning

Rob and I got a new mattress and memory foam pillows...slept SO good.  Did not want to get up especially Hailey doesn't have school today.  But I knew I would feel good once I ran.  I did my regular 2 mile route and it was fine.  Still getting back into the groove of exercising again, but feels great to be out there.  We've had wonderful sunny weather lately!  Enjoying it!

My sinus cold and stomach bug are pretty much gone.  I feel back to normal.  Except the last two evenings (Sunday night and tonight) my skin flared up and I broke out in hives.  I only documenting this here unless I need to call a doctor.  They always ask when it happened and I don't remember unless I write it down.  Last night I felt it coming on when I was in the nursery during the evening service (around 6).  I felt my lips getting swollen and I started breaking out all over my hips, then face, ears etc. I put some of Rob's anti-inflammatory cream on it and took two Benadryl.  Woke this morning and it was all gone.  Today it started around 4 PM and started on my hands.  It is so uncomfortable when your hands itch!  Then it spread to my legs, hips, face, and ears, around my eyes, back etc.  I am just rash girl again tonight.

I am a little bit of a hypochondriac or webochondriac.  Rob gets really annoyed when I "Wed MD" everything and worry I have some terrible disease.  After google imaging it, it looks exactly like hives.  It could be my immune system is in overdrive and recovering...or I am allergic to something.  Or as someone else said it could be a reaction to stress.  But I'm really not that stressed out right now.  Crazy...I am not going to call Dr. V unless this continues for a week or so.  I heard a few other people mention hives break outs after they have been sick.

Tuesday:  Ran 4 miles

Ran during Rob's lunch and it was nice and sunny out.  Not my best run, but was doable and not too bad.  My ankle is not hurting as much either.  Nice to run outside.  My friend Jeanelle said her daughter dealt with the hives after being sick for a week to 10 days and all her symptoms are the same as fine.  My doctor friend Aletha said not to call Dr. V yet.  Just to take Claritin or Benadryl and it's most likely the result of a virus.  My skin is still so prickly but I have not broken out yet today.  Will probably happen tonight.  I feel like Teen Wolf.

Wednesday - Rest

And the hives are gone!  Still have mild allergic reaction...but the Claritin worked.

Thursday - Swam 25 minutes

I wanted to do Power as well, but didn't want to push it.  Still adjusting to exercising in the mornings again. It was hard to get up. I got on the scale and was shocked how much weight I lost...mostly from being sick.  I  have been eating pretty healthy the past week.  I swam mostly freestyle the whole time and it felt good to be back in the pool again.  I shared a lane with a really good swimmer...the pool was packed!  Thankfully I didn't run into her. Good workout.

Friday - Bike 31 minutes, Swam 16 minutes

Still having a hard time getting up in the morning, but we had an easier Friday than normal.  So it was doable to go to the gym around 10 AM.  I did Level 3 on the interval track on the bike and it was a good workout. The pool was packed as usual for a Friday morning, but I ended up sharing a lane with another swimmer.  That was fine.  We didn't run into one another.  It's good practice for swimming with other people which I will have to do in a triathlon.  The weather here turned from nice to nasty as it usually does this time of year so grateful for a gym membership.  Not having any hives breakouts and haven't taken Claritin for 36 hours.  No cold or stomach ache symptoms either.  I feel more energertic...got a lot done yesterday and was more motivated to do games and puzzles with the kids.

Saturday - Swam 15 minutes & Group Ride (50 minutes)

Was motivated enough to get out of bed at 7 AM on a Saturday.  :)  I knew if I did not go to the gym there was no way I could go at any other time with the schedule we had.  The pool was dead and I got a lane right away.  Swimming went fine.  I worked up arms and rotation a good part of the time.  I was surprised I saw people getting bikes for Group Ride already at 7:40 (it doesn't start until 8!) that I kind of questioned if I needed to get out of the pool early.  I went upstairs to Ride at 7:55 and it was really packed, but there were a few bikes left.  I had to go to the very front, but I don't mind that.  I really like to be able to see and hear the instructor...not the back of someone (I'm pretty short!).  It was a sub as the regular Saturday girl was running a marathon.  The sub was awesome!  She really made it interactive and fun.  I have not been to Ride in several weeks so it was very tough.  If we had been on real bikes, I probably would have been dead last.  I was glad I got out there and went.  The instructor had just home from Indonesia so I stayed and talked to her about Indonesia afterwards.  She's also running Shamrock in a couple weeks.  And it was a really busy Saturday and I was ready to crash by the end of it.  I did get a 15-20 minutes snooze in the afternoon.

Sunday - Ran 6 miles

I did a brand new route I've never done before.  I ran in the Candalaria/Salem Heights neighborhoods so I could do some hills.  I hate the first Cunningham hill.  I always feel like I am going to keel over and it's not very steep.  It's just right away before I have really warmed up.  The hills were hard and I took a few tiny walk breaks, but not many.  I would do the route again and try it on my bike.  It was nice to run on back roads and not deal with traffic lights.  The hills were pretty manageable.

February 15 - 17

Friday - Ran 3 miles

Yay!  Amy can exercise again.  It's about flippin' time.  My glands and lymph nodes are still a little swollen. Body is not quite back to normal--but I can run!  It was a really good run.  It is 60 degrees here and sunny.  That was very motivating. It was great to run in shorts and a t-shirt.  My body felt like it had not exercised in several weeks, but it honestly did not feel terribly hard to run.

Saturday - Ran 4 miles

I feel like this blog is turning to a health & wellness blog.  I felt a lot better in the morning.  I noticed rashes on my hips and areas of my skin were inflamed.  It looked like poison ivy or mosquito bites...which I have not had any exposure to.  It was worse right around my eyes, my neck, my hips, and knees.  Rob gave me his strong skin cream he has used.  I took Benadryl.  Both helped, but Benadryl makes me woozy and tired.  I pushed myself to go the gym around 6:30 PM even though I was practically asleep on the couch.  I did a little over four miles on the treadmill maintaining about a 9:30 pace.  Was a really good run.  Felt great afterwards.  But was falling asleep again by 9:45.  Took more Benadryl and slept great.  But kind of dragging and tired today.  Most of the inflammation is gone except I still feel itchy around the eyes.

Sunday - Rest

I could have ran today, but I want to run both Monday & Tuesday.  I think all the running that many days in the row would be too much.  My legs are really sore today.  The times I have gotten injuries are when I do too much too soon.  Over the years I have been able to figure out what my body can handle.  At least I am running again and feeling much more decent.  Aside from a little skin inflammation and my anxiety has been a little higher (I'm behind on a lot of things having been sick).  Praying for a healthy week.

Still sick...

I didn't run all weekend because I had a massive organizing project upstairs and in the attic I had to complete.  We have a guest staying up there this week and it really just needed to be done...long overdue.  So I made that my priority.  I really glad I got it done before Sunday.  Around Sunday night around 10 PM my stomach started to hurt...I really didn't think much of it. I felt fine all day and had a totally normal appetite.     By 2 AM I was throwing up.  I was up every 1-2 hours.  By noon my stomach did not hurt as much anymore, but my head did.  Horrible sinus head ache.  I have a pretty good pain tolerance, but I was crying it hurt so bad. My whole body was achy.  I managed to keep some Advil down (barely)  and slept hard for two solid hours straight.  When I woke up around 5 PM I felt significantly better...just weak because I didn't eat all day...just drank Gatorade and 7 Up.  Today I feel much, much better.  I either had food poisoning or it was the tail end of a sinus infection.  It was not an intestinal bug at all...totally in my stomach.  I don't think I had a fever either.  Ready to be healthy!!

I decided I am going to do a triathlon a little later in the summer.  That will give me some more time.  That way I can get more outside biking in before the actual tri.  These next few weeks I am really going to focus on running (and swim/bike for cross training) and get up to 7-8 miles by the second week of March.  It's not been a fun last couple of weeks.  I have not dealt with this much illness in a couple years.  I know there is lots of sinus stuff going around this winter.  We did not have a good freeze this year and fall allergies were at an all time high.

Cold and Sinus Part 2

I did not feel better on Wednesday.  Tuesday night my throat still felt like sand paper.  I took NyQuil again and it only took the edge off of it.  I skipped Bible Study in the morning and tried to talk very little.  I found the talking didn't really make it better nor did it make it worse.  I still felt fatigued.  I was going to try do a short run over Rob's lunch.  Just running to Wal Mart to pick up a few things and going to church to make some copies was tiring enough...I felt like I had to lay down.  I took the kids to the indoor playground so they could play and I could sit and read a book--I felt like I could do very little at home anyway and Rob was going to work an extra half hour.  Last night I was sitting to watch TV with Rob and my throat just throbbed again.  I took Advil and it really took the edge off--and I finally slept better last night coughing a little bit--and not taking any NyQuil.  I had only taken Sudafed in the morning.  I have taken Sudafed, Muccinex, Advil, and NyQuil on top of my regular medications and vitamins.  Rob said one of his friends at karate had similar symptoms and was popping ibuprofen for days on end.

Today is the best day I have had since last week Wednesday.  Throat still hurts, but very subtle. I can finally swallow normally.  My ears have less pressure.  My voice is back to normal.  My energy level is almost 100%.  What a yucky cold!!

I am going to try to run tomorrow.  I miss exercising!!

Cold and Sinus

On Friday I woke up sick with a pounding headache, sinus pressure, coughing etc.  I could feel it coming on Wednesday night.  Thursday it was pretty mild.  I stayed in bed Friday until 10 AM.  I almost texted Matt and told him I couldn't go on the ETM event that night.  I really didn't want to cancel it on account of my illness. The middle schoolers were so looking forward to it.  As I walked around a little bit and ate some lunch, I felt like I could do it.  My voice was getting hoarse and I still felt the pressure, but it was mostly in my ears.  After I dropped off Makayla home and was back by 10 PM--I was really exhausted.  Saturday woke up with no voice...it sounded raspy and horrible.  I was fine going to Hailey's basketball game, but was exhausted when we came home.  I was starting to get dizzy again.  Sunday was pretty tiring but I pushed through.  I really thought I would feel better by today, but I still feel pretty crummy.  I've been able to go to everything I need to.  I taught co-op preschool this morning.  I took the kids to their activities, cleaned as much as I'm able, and made dinner. Got my articles written. I have had to take Nyquil that last three nights.  While it's good for sleep, it's not natural sleep.  I can tell I am way more tired.  I've taken afternoon naps the last three days.  Last night my throat and larynx felt like cement and there was a constant tickle in my throat. I almost considered calling the doctor and getting tested for strep.  But I've had strep before and this feels really different.  After I take Sudafed, it goes away for a couple hours until it wears off.  I have been drinking tea non-stop around the clock.  I have not been able to exercise since Thursday which really, really stinks.  I am going to try to run tomorrow over Rob's lunch.  Hopefully my throat and larynx will be a little bit better then.  I think it's going to be another week before I am completely back to normal, but at least the ear & head pressure is pretty much gone.  I had a cold similar to this when I was a sophomore in college when I lost my voice and I do remember it took like 2 weeks before it was gone.  I hope I feel better tomorrow!!
