Monday - Ran 3 miles
I had a great run this morning. I got out the door by 6:40. It was pretty dark out and slightly rainy. I wore my reflector vest and ran through the Sumpter neighborhood. Pretty tired after a super busy weekend, but hanging in there.
Tuesday - Rest
Really busy day!
Wednesday - Rest
Totally forgot Rob had Bible Study and I couldn't go to the gym in the morning. Really couldn't get there any other time in the day and was not crazy about going 9 at night.
Thursday - Swim 12 minutes, Bike 24 minutes
I started the Week #1 of the triathlon plan. I might have to repeat Week #2 because I am going to miss 3-4 days next week because I am going to be in San Diego for part of the week. Swimming went really good. I tried to go continuous and not stop. Between lengths I would stop and count to five and start again--just enough to catch my breath. I did all freestyle aside from one lap of backstroke and one lap of breaststroke. Then I rode the stationary bike for 24 minutes.
Friday - Swam 16 minutes, Ran 12 minutes
I swam mostly freestyle but I tried breaststroke for 2 laps. I still can't do it very well and don't really get it. I can fly with pull buoy--like do continued laps. I hardly have to stop. Running went fine. I just did it on the treadmill at about a 6.2 average speed.
Saturday - Swim lessons - 35 minutes of breaststroke
My last swim lesson!! Sorry to be done but looking forward to having my Saturday mornings back. I might book 1-2 private lessons before April. Or see if I can find someone to check my breaststroke. I worked on it the whole time. I worked on frog kicks with the kickboard. That helped just concentrate on kicks. I was getting it more as time went on. I am going to keep working on it. I just might switch to swimming three days a week now as I really want to get back into Group Power once a week. I also think I am going to do the Shamrock in March. A couple people from our church are doing it. I want to do the 15k which means I need to be up to around 9-10 miles by March. I think that's possible. I've had no problem running 3 miles. I am just going to keep adding 1 or 1/2 mile each week on my long run day which might have to be Sundays or Saturdays. I just need new running shoes, gu packets, Ultima sports drink, a new bathing suit eventually--it all adds up! That is why I have had to wait a couple years before I could even think about a tri. It took me like two years to buy a good bike and take swim lessons. Thankfully I have made friends with biking people and swimming people so that helps!

October 15 - 21
Monday - Ran 40 minutes
It's Thursday as I am writing this and trying to remember workouts. The rain came with a vengeance on Friday. It lasted through the whole weekend and carried into Monday. Yuk. The morning was not so bad. I was at the pumpkin patch with Hailey's school and it didn't start raining until we left. I ran at 4 PM. It was raining, but not pouring. I decided to run to Woodmansee Park and run through the trails. I figured the trees would block out some of the rain. It did help it is still in the high 60's and the rain is not cold...yet...that's coming this weekend. Anyway I missed a turn or else the trail I usually ran on is blocked. I found myself running through all these nasty blackberry bushes and it cut up my legs (I was wearing shorts). I had to cross this creek that I am pretty sure is just a trickling stream when it's not raining. There was a fence over the stream that was hanging across it. The bottom part of the fence was cut out. I "monkey barred" across it and the fence started to give out. I made it across...I really felt like I was doing a trail run or obstacle course. Finally made it out the park and I was in the backyard of the nursing home. I just went up the driveway and ran home. I have no idea what my distance was. My guess is 3.5 miles when all is said and done.
Tuesday - Rest
Kind of a crazy day. We're moving Kara into Hailey's room and Derek into Kara's room (which once was Derek's room when he was a baby and Hailey's room before Derek was born). It took a lot of time switching clothes around etc. I am still not done. I was going to try and run or bike in the afternoon, but we had too much going on. We're getting ready to leave for the coast.
Wednesday - Hike - approximately 2 hours and forty minutes
Rob and I dropped all three kids off at Coffee Break and Margie took them home. They stayed with the VB family overnight. Rob and I drove to Lincoln City and got to the Cascade Head trail around noon. We hiked an hour and then ate lunch along the trail. Then we hiked the rest of the day. I never hiked along the coast before and it was AMAZING seeing the ocean through the trees and hearing all the sea lions. Once we hit the meadow, it was beautiful. We sat along the edge of the meadow overlooking the ocean. I LOVE Oregon!!! Honestly it don't think there is any place in the US as beautiful as some of the places I have seen the last couple of years. At first we weren't sure the trip was going to happen because there is a man in our church who is pretty sick and he's in his 90's. We thought vacation would have to get moved around due to a potential funeral. This man (who is like the pillar of our church--really important guy) is still hanging on and doing OK. Rob checked his cell phone before we hiked back and saw there was a voicemail. We couldn't retrieve it because we couldn't get service. We didn't panic or worry or anything. I think this was one of the reasons we hiked back fast. We were hauling. Some of the uphills were hard. Rob has a much wider stride than I do so I felt like I was pushing myself at times to keep up with him. It was a great hike and I loved it! Rob is sore and has blisters on his heels. I managed to come out OK. I taped up my heels and toes. I used my hiking pole especially on the downhills. I totally feel like an outdoorsy Oregonian and I love it!
Thursday - Rest
Rob and I stayed at a resort along the coast. We checked out after 9 AM, grabbed breakfast, and went to the outlet mall for an hour. We had to pick up the kids around 12:30 so we left home after shopping. We got home. I did some cleaning, went to Wal Mart with Hailey, and then had to bring her to a birthday party. Was home a few hours and then went to two of the youth group kid's choir concert they invited me. Full day but good one. My parents are here beginning tomorrow and not sure how much pool time I'm going to get in. Such is the way it goes. Don't get to see them very much so that of course is a priority the next few days.
Friday - Rest
Very busy day with the parents & family. But fun.
Saturday - Swim lessons - 40 minutes
I am really struggling with breaststroke. I don't get the form. I tried for about 20 minutes. I was still not getting it. I watched a You Tube video and I understand it a little bit more, but I need to work on it this week. Freestyle is fine. I finally got it and it looks great. I can finally glide across the water and starting to pick up speed. Missed being able to swim this week, but should be able to get a couple swims in next week.
Sunday - Rest
More time spent with family.

October 8 - 14
Monday: Biked 5 miles, Ran 1 mile (approximately 35 minutes total not counting transition and traffic lights)
This was the first time I biked and then transitioned to run. It is so different starting run after you've biked. Once I got going on the run, I felt fine. The bike was harder. I struggled on some of the hills. But I felt great afterwards. My endurance is still pretty good. I found a triathlon training program for beginners. I think I am going to start it after I finish swim lessons so that would be early November. It is four months long and it's swim focused meaning I swim the most of three exercises. Even if I don't do a triathlon until May or June, I can just keep increasing the time. It's set up by time not miles. Each week just adds 2-3 minutes with a kick back week. It would be super easy to formulate on my own. Plus I can repeat weeks when we get busy (like around Christmas). I am going to miss this weather--it's been one of the best falls ever! So much warm and 70's - 80's. I think it's going to rain this weekend. :(
Tuesday: Ran 3 miles
I got out the door just after 6:30. It felt so good to run. I was going pretty fast and felt like I was running off "steam." I was kind of frustrated with something last night and it carried over to this morning. I feel better now thankfully. Kind of a crazy morning and I missed breakfast which almost never happens. I ended up eating McD's while the kids were in preschool. Not the greatest choice of foods, but I figure once in awhile is not a big deal. I never eat fast food for breakfast. Ever. I thought this week would be easygoing, but it is proving to not be that way. Thankfully I have some time now to get caught up things and I don't have to go anywhere tonight. Thank goodness for exercise--it really helps.
Wednesday: Swam 450 km (9 laps) & five minutes of breast stroke/kick turns
Got out the door by 5:50 and in the pool by 6:10. I did two laps non stop of freestyle. Then I did seven laps freestyle with the pull buoy and only took little breaks between the laps--not the lengths. I wish I had the endurance to go longer without the pull buoy and it is still so tough. I am making progress and really pushing myself. My form is so much better even than what it was at one week ago. Josh told me to practice kick turns and somersaults in the pool. First try so much water in the nose--bleck. The next few times no water in the nose but totally sideways and all over the place. I felt like a fool. Oh well--guess you have to start somewhere. It was hard to do it after being so tired from swimming laps. But I should be able to practice tomorrow and for sure on Friday when I have a bit more time.
Thursday - Rest
So hard to get up Thursday mornings after youth group Wednesday nights. Youth group went awesome though--loving it! Feel like my long lost spark for youth ministry returned. Love those kids!! And it's cool because my kids love those kids and vice versa.
Anyway I think I might try and go to Group Ride Thursday mornings instead of swim. Or try to both but that might be too much. I miss going to a class.
Friday - Swam 40 minutes, Bike 22 minutes
Big workout this morning. Swimming stunk at the beginning. I realized I need to do a warm up lap either with the kickboard or pull buoy before I jump right into it. My legs were off, arms were off, I felt like I was suffocated. I felt awful. Once I did two laps, I felt fine. I did three full laps with the pull buoy. I think I am going to work on endurance on Wednesdays. The triathlon guide says to just keep doing laps and switch to breaststroke or backstroke if you have to. I never officially learned either stroke but I taught myself to do them. I might just ask Josh if I am doing them right. I did that a little today--I did a lap of breaststroke in between. I stopped and counted slowly to "10" before beginning another lap just to catch my breath. The lady in the lane next to me would switch to breaststroke or even flutter kicking with the kickboard and then do a few laps of freestyle. I think that would be good for me to do too.
I tried kick turns again and I need some major instruction because I am so lopsided. I can do them if I am using my hands to touch the bottom of the pool and redirect my body like I am doing a handstand. Some if it is fear of getting a bunch of water in my nose or getting dizzy. They are so much harder than I thought they would be.
After swimming I biked on the stationary bike for 22 minutes. I pushed myself pretty hard and it was a good workout.
Saturday - Swim lessons - 40 minutes, Lap swimming with Hailey & practicing kick turns--approximately 35 minutes
I was so tired this morning. We went out with Andrew & Cheryl. Even though they left by 10, I did not go to bed until midnight. It was hard to get up this morning. I felt so tired even as I was driving to swim lessons. I really was not in the mood and hoped I could get more in the mood once I got in the pool. I still needed practice with my arms so we worked on that the entire time. It's much better--I am doing better on the weak side. Josh said one side will always be stronger than the other. I really made some progress and swam laps almost the whole time with small breaks. Josh said to touch my hand to my thigh on every single stroke and I will get the form down. It helped.
I came home and was very surprised that that Rob had just returned from urgent care. He had to take the church van with no car seats. I think you might not need car seats because it is the same level as a bus? Probably not. It was only a mile drive. Anyway Derek fell off a stool and gashed open his head. It was bleeding so bad they had to stitch it right away. He was very brave and Rob said the girls did fine. Hailey was a little shook up. Derek is totally fine. I am glad Rob didn't call me or I would have freaked out. He tried calling me at 9:45, but I was already driving. I didn't hear the phone go off.
I took Hailey to the gym around 2. We practiced lap swimming for a little bit. She practiced her freestyle and backstroke. She can swim a full lap of freestyle with a kickboard and probably about a length without. We went over to the warm pool where she could play. I practiced flip turns and breaststroke. We had a great time. We also played basketball for 15-20 minutes in the gym. I signed her up for basketball--she really wants to try it. We'll see if she likes it. I hated basketball, but I think I would have liked it had I tried it later on. I think I would have liked just playing with friends, but I always shyed away from it.
Wow--crazy weekend. The rain has officially returned. We can't complain. We had the driest September on record. We knew it was coming. We couldn't have our sun forever. It was in the high 60's though so at least it's not cold. No winter coats for awhile.

October 1 - 7
Monday: Biked 7 miles
Rob took a late lunch and I was able to get my bike out during it. Good ride. Such a beautiful day and nice to be out enjoying it. I tried the Baxter hill and I got up almost the whole way--except the last 1/4. It was tough. All the other hills were fine. I feel more confident and I really love biking.
Tuesday: Ran 2 miles
Rob took another late lunch today and I ran in the beautiful spectacular weather! I ran the Lone Oak/Liberty route. I was running so fast and felt so strong--I could have easily done another mile. I was really surprised I felt so good! Last night I started getting nasal and sinus congestion. I had a sinus headache during the night. This morning it was so bad it was triggering anxiety (I really can't explain it--I don't why it triggers all my physical anxiety symptoms. I have nothing to be anxious about right now). The only reason I could put two and two together is I had the same thing last October. I almost had a panic attack in Costco last October for no reason and I had a really bad sinus cold. It was making me queasy to the point I was dry heaving in the Lancaster Mall parking lot. Holly gave me a Sudafed after I picked up Derek & Kara which really helped. It was kind of in and out the rest of the day but was fine while I was running! Here's hoping it clears up!
Wednesday: Swam 20 minutes
I am hitting the gym in the late evenings this week since our schedule is so different this week for mornings. I don't mind it so much. The pool is totally dead at 9 PM. I don't mind less people there. I am becoming a swimmer!! It was so great tonight!! I did a total of nine laps: warm up freestyle with kickboard, two full laps non-stop of freestyle, one lap on my back with the kickboard, two laps mostly non-stop of freestyle with the pull buoy, one lap freestyle, one lap on back with kickboard. I can do about two lap without stopping. I had to stop 3/4 of the way through to adjust my goggles. I know I can do it again. It's amazing once you figure out the breathing, get your legs straight in the right position--you can really swim! When I run, I able to zone out and just run. I am getting there with swimming. Thankfully I did not have as much nasal/sinus congestion today. Felt better aside from being groggy in the morning (I took Benadryl before bed). Derek also started gymnastics today--so cute! Glad he gets his own activity that is all his own.
Thursday - Rest
Yesterday was very busy! I taught Moppets, had Justin all day, Annabelle for part of the day. I got SO much little unfinished stuff done. Plus my cold is not getting any better. Decided to rest.
Friday - Swam 25 minutes
Just when I am getting cocky and think--"Wow, I got it. I don't have to learn much more," I am humbled once again. Actually I swam a very similar workout to Wednesday night, although I think I did one extra lap. Two continuous laps is still very hard and my form always falls apart on the last length. I wish I had the endurance just keep on moving, but I don't yet. I still struggle breathing on one side (and ironically Hailey's swim teacher said she is struggling with the same thing) but I made myself stay in the pool until I felt better about it and could do it less sloppy. I felt better as the workout went on. I was thinking Wednesday I could drop down to swimming only three times a week, but I think I want to stay at four awhile longer. I need the practice and the confidence.
Saturday - Swam 40 minutes (swim lessons)
I got to swim lessons and did one lap of freestyle. Josh said flutter kicks look great. He said we were going to work on arms the whole time. I did SO many laps (like I could not believe I could keep going) with the pull buoy working on following through with my arms and pushing the water back. He said it was looking a lot better--and it felt better. I have been struggling to breathe on one side since I started swimming and I felt like I conquered that. He said to practice arms all week. He also said I would have no problem doing a sprint triathlon in the spring if I kept swimming 2-3 days a week. Yay! It feels so great to learn something new and accomplish a goal. I LOVE running and biking. Now I really like swimming too. My arms were pretty sore the rest of the day. I still have a sinus headache. I still feel fatigued. This cold has not been fun. I slept an hour and a half on the couch in the afternoon.
Next week we are going to learn flip turns which I am a little unsure of. Doing front somersaults in the pool as a kid--I would always get water up my nose or get so dizzy. I am going to practice a little on my own this week in the warm pool. I did watch a you tube video that explained it pretty well.
