August 29 - September 2

Monday -  Rest

Not starting off the week very well.  Had a really busy weekend running from one thing to the next.  Was quite tired and could not get up.  I could not work out over Rob's lunch as he had a lunch meeting.

Tuesday - Biked 45 minutes

It took four alarms but I made it out of bed and on my bike by 6:45 AM.  I had a great ride.  It is getting much cooler in the mornings, but thankfully still sunny.  Feel way more confident on my bike and the uphills are getting easier.

Wednesday - Group Power & Ran 2 miles

Group Power kicks my butt!  So sore in my triceps, biceps, and shoulders.  Love the workout though.  I got there five minutes early and barely got a spot.  So many crazy people getting up early.  I was so worn out I could barely run.  Once I got going, I got into a groove.  Had a really good day too.  Got a lot done and spent quality time with the kids.

Thursday - Ran 3 1/4 miles

I could not get up this morning.  Still struggling with mornings. Slept until 7:30.  Thankfully Rob was home at lunch today and I ran during his lunch.  I love running outside.  Prefer it hands down to the treadmill.  I ran through the neighborhood behind the place where Hailey takes swimming. I like that little neighborhood.  It was a good run.

Friday - Yoga 35 minutes

Really wanted to get up this morning and go to the gym.  Don't know where my motivation has gone.  Rob was gone all day in Portland with the older two kids.  Kara and I went to Riverfront Park in the morning and ran errands until lunch.  I managed to get some cleaning done while she napped.  Feels so incredibly strange to just have one child in the house.  Those days seem like eons ago.  Anyway I also did a yoga video while she napped.  My muscles and legs have been so tight lately.  It really helped.  I don't like videos.  I love the workout classes that have better music and people around.  But it's a good alternative because I can't really get to the gym at all today.

Saturday - Bike 15 minutes, Group Power, swam 10 minutes, bike 20 minutes

I told Rob I really wanted to make Saturday Power.  He had to go to Hubbard and pick up all the meat, but offered to take the kids.  He lent me his bike lock so I could bike to the gym.  Wow--I am loving biking.  It is so fun!  Power was the same workout as Wednesday except the shoulder track was different.  I managed to do all the push ups on my toes.  The triceps track was still hard.  The shoulders track--so tough!  I was really glad I went.  I swam about ten minutes (about four full laps) and I wish I loved it as much as I love running and biking.  It's still so hard and kind of frustrating.  I really hope the swim lessons will help me with technique and be able to do continuous laps without feeling like I am going to lose a lung.  I need to spend a couple weeks and just focus on swimming.  I will probably do that once the rain hits and biking and running outside is not going to be as pleasant.  The ride home was fine aside from the fact I feel like I am playing chicken if I am going to make a left turn from Commerical to Kuebler on a bike.  I just won't do it.  I had to bike all the way up to Trader Joe's and take Hilfiker home which cost me an extra ten minutes.  Rob suggested taking Barnes which might work, but there's not a light there.

They also have switched around the early morning schedule at the gym.  If I am going to do Power twice a week, I am going to have to do it back to back days (Thursday & Friday) which is not ideal.  I will not be able to do Saturday Power for the next eight weeks as I have swimming then.  I'm sure I'll figure something out.

Sunday - Rest

I did not sleep well Saturday night.  I was up several times and then up again at 4 when Rob heard noises outside.  :(  Turned out to be nothing.  He thought it was an ambulance door slamming and thought our neighbors (they're old) were in trouble.  I took a nap in the afternoon and then got some things done around in the house afterwards.  I ended up having nursery unexpectedly in the evening service.  It was fine.  Adam was in there half the time too and played with the preschool boys.

August 20 - 26

Well last week exercise did not really happen.  I was lazy on Monday.  Ran once on Tuesday.  Forgot to move the "on" switch to the alarm on Wednesday and did not get up.  Thursday was Rob's birthday and I was tied up all day.  By Friday I gave up.  :)  I guess the fact I'm not really training for anything, it is OK to take some time off.  I had bad sore throat issues at the beginning of the week which changed to watery eyes and nasal allergy issues later on.  Did not sleep well at the beginning of the week.

I start swim lessons on September 8th which I am pretty excited about.  I got the tires on my bike fixed so I can ride this week again.  Looking forward to a new week.

August 13 - 19

Monday:  Biked about 40 minutes

I got out around 6:40 AM and did about a 7-8 mile ride around the neighborhood.  Nice to be out riding.

Tuesday:  Ran 3 miles

Got out by 6:50 AM and ran around the Sumpter neighborhood.  It was going to be in the high 90's so everyone was out running or biking.  So glad I didn't wait until Rob's lunch--would have been too hard.  It is humid too and my body is not used to it.  For some reason I have a scratchy throat and on and off sneezing--my allergies act up in August.  Same thing as last year.

Wednesday:  Group Power & Ran 2 miles

Made it to morning Group Power and it was the toughest Power workout I've ever had.  So many push ups!  I really pushed myself though and increased my weight.  Biceps and shoulders are still the toughest.  I did 2 miles on the treadmill afterwards.

Thursday:  Group Ride

I went to the 6 AM Ride class.  A little funny that the instructor is Hailey's PE teacher.  The class was probably a 1/4 full and I hope that means they don't cancel it.  I can't make the 5:00 AM class--way too early.  6 is doable.  I had not been to Group Ride since I was training for the Sacramento marathon back in 2010.  It is a tough class and I don't always completely understand how it works--but I'm willing to go once a week especially if it gets too dark in the morning to ride my bike.

Friday: Ran 3.1 miles on treadmill & swam 15 minutes

My body is sore in places it is not usually sore like my triceps, core muscles, abs etc.  This is good because it means I am working parts of my body that were not normally worked when I was training for the marathon.  I ran on the treadmill on the 5K track and I kept the incline low so I could run fast.  I liked running a faster pace.  I swam about 4 laps with breaks into laps and lengths.  It's still so tough.  Although I know I am improving, it is such a slow progression compared to running and biking.  I am signing up for an adult swim class in September and I'm hoping that will really help me.  I also need to try swimming before I run or bike versus after.

Saturday - Group Power

I went to the 9 AM Power class.  Had hopes to get to the gym a little earlier than that and swim again.  The kids were sleeping in.  I took a small dose of Nyquil last night to help with my throat and I slept so much better.  I did get up in time to eat breakfast and make it to the Power.  I had leave right afterwards so Rob could get to the office.  Same instructor as Wednesday and almost the exact same workout.  With all those push ups.  Yuk.  I kept my weight almost the same as Wednesday.  I felt good pushing myself to the limit.  It's been a great week of workouts.  I managed to work out every single morning.

My weight is the same.  I am maintaining it fine without using My Fitness Pal.  I'll go back on if I start gaining a lot of weight again.

Moodwise I have been a little stressed and overwhelmed.  The end of August is not my favorite time of year as there is such a crunch to get ready for the fall.  I am trying to handle it better.

August 6-12

I'm back.  Here's what I have been up to.  When I ended the last post, I missed going to Group Power for a second time.  Last minute we ended up going to friend's house and spending the whole afternoon and evening at their house and in their pool and hot tub.  Fun day.  The following day I climbed Mt. Defiance in the Columbia River Gorge with Cheryl, Matt, Jessica, Karen, Willona, and Jennifer.  It was such a TOUGH climb that I did not think any of us would summit.  But we all did!  It took our group about nine hours and the other group over ten.

The following day my whole legs were sore.  Worse than after I ran the marathon.  We had our church picnic at Silver Falls and I still managed to hike the South Falls loop holding Kara's hand the entire time.  She could have out hiked me no problem.  I could not bear to wear shoes because my feet felt so suffocated after being in boots all day long the day prior.  So I hiked in my flip flops.

It didn't really start hurting until Monday morning.  I took Tylenol and kept applying Icy Hot patches.  It was my upper thighs that hurt so bad--I've never been sore there after running.  We did so much climbing and downhill hiking--my legs are not used to that.  I knew there was no way I could go to Group Power much less run.  We were leaving for Philly on that Friday early morning so I didn't try to do anything.

In Philly I was not able to exercise at all due to our schedule and the place we were staying.  I don't think it would have been safe for me to go running alone.  We did lots of walking though especially our tourist day.  That felt good.  We were home less than 48 hours and then drove to Penticton, BC for the family vacation.  I ran one morning in Pentiction and it was wonderful.  I love running by the waterfront.  I wish I would have run a little more, but I was not very motivated.

Now we've been home since Sunday night.  And I'm still SO tired.  I don't feel like doing anything or seeing anyone except for my family and my friend Margaret who has been coming by everyday.  I've been taking her daughter to ILC's VBS with Hailey every morning.  I'm not ready to jump back into normal life.  My "to-do list" for next week (mostly church and Banner stuff) keeps growing.

I am motivated though to exercise so that's good.   I have not been eating great, but not terrible.  I have only gained about a pound.  I ate super healthy today.  It helps having all this fresh fruit and vegetables around.

Monday - No exercise

I was SO tired and needed to rest and sleep.  I barely got the kids to VBS on time.

Tuesday - Ran 3 miles

It felt so good to run again.  I did my regular three mile route after I dropped the kids off at VBS.  I am not as shape as I was, but I can still do three miles no problem.  Love the cooler mornings.  It's too hot to run after 1 PM.

Wednesday - 2 1/2 mile run & Group Power

I did my old route to Ewald.  It is just over two and a half miles.  It went fine.  I felt better than the day before.  Then I went to 5 PM Group Power.  Since Rob is still on vacation this week, we've been staying up later and watching the Olympics.  We've been sleeping until 8 AM.  Come next week I'll get back on a regular routine and try and make morning Group Power.  It was great to be at Power again.  The shoulder track is by far the most challenging for me.  Biceps and chest are second place.  I don't struggle as much on the squats and lunges or the abs workout.

Thursday - Ran a 5K and I don't know my time yet

Kind of decided this morning I would be up for going to the Willamette Roadrunners Cross Country night at Bush Park.  They have it every Thursday in August.  I only made it once last summer because I got a bad stomach bug and I didn't feel normal for well over a week.  Then we ran into scheduling conflicts with other stuff near the end of the month. Anyway Hailey and Derek did the kid's race.  They aren't competitive runners like some of the other kids there, but they had fun.  I guess I don't really care about them placing or winning--I would rather just have them enjoy it and do their best.  They're so young to be all competitive.  Anyway the 5K is a tough course because very little of it is on asphalt or pavement.  It's rocks, wood chips, and grass--not used to that.  And hilly too.  I noticed on all the uphills I pass so many people.  I am pretty good at uphill.  Then they often caught up to me on the downhill.  Downhills are almost harder for me.  I didn't place.  Last summer I hardly even came close to placing.  It's a lot of elite runners--a little intimidating. I felt great doing it and I would do one or two more before the summer is over.   It's nice to be outside and at the park on a weeknight.

Friday - Bike 27 minutes, swam around 20 minutes

I went to the gym later in the day around 7:30ish.  Did the stationary bike and pushed myself pretty hard.  I did hills and it was tough.  My thighs were hurting after I was done.  I was able to swim a lap, take a short break and swim another.  I swam a few lengths with breaks in between.  Then I did two laps with the kickboard.  Felt good to be in the water!  I am getting more confident.  I might to do 2-3 weeks of just swimming this fall.

Weekend

I have been a little behind on tracking my exercise.  Saturday I did not go the gym because our cat was trapped under the house for five hours.  We thought she was in the walls.  It took some problem solving and then some effort to retrieve her.  It honestly felt like a workout.  By late afternoon, I was done.  I had no interest in trying to go the gym or exercise.  On Sunday I took the day off as well.
